We arrived just after 7pm in Yilan. We wanted everything to be over with as soon as possible, seeing that if we were going to take the car we would have to drive back to Kaohsiung, which is about a 6 hour drive. We met the people, took a look at the car and almost immediately decided to take it.
When we started looking for a car we had a specific things we wanted. Cheap but reliable as it would be something we would only use for longer trips or if we wanted to go surfing or cycling on one of the many bike routes around Taiwan. So it had to be big enough so that we could fit absolutely anything, but also something we wouldn't feel guilty about leaving in the sun and rain. We narrowed our options down to either the Toyota Zace of Surf or the Mitsubishi Freeca. The Toyota Surf is the newer model to the Zace and turned out to be a little more than what we wanted to spend. On the other hand the Mitsubishi Freecas we looked at were either in such bad shape we didn't want to even sneeze near them or they were almost brand new which again pushed the price up to more than what we wanted to spend. And from what we heard from everyone we spoke to, the Toyota was the better option, as any spares or repairs would be easily available and quite a bit cheaper.
So when we saw the Zace we thought it"s by far better than anything we've seen and exactly what we want. It obviously won't win any beauty contests but it's what we were looking for.
Some info about the car...
Toyota Zace
Year: 1995
Milage: 170 000km
We sorted everything out, took the car and headed back home. Unfortunately things took a little longer than expected, so we only got going a little after 9pm. Being such a long day I felt a little sleepy along the way so we pulled over for a short nap. O yes, something I haven't mentioned. The owners were pretty big surfers and campers as well, so they had a bed frame made for the van which fits perfectly into the back if the backseat is taken out, and they had bars installed for their surfboards which slides in above your head.
We finally arrived back home at around 4am.
